Cujo's team needed a physical product to bring their revolutionary security software system to people's home: "a box". Adding visual interaction helped creating more trust with the users; while the recognizable design promoted public awareness.

Most of the time, Cujo displays happy eyes telling the user "everything is fine, I'm here". But when a threat shows up, it switches to active mode, indicated by full focused eyes. And since it's always filtering your internet connection, at night, the user is being reassured by visible sleepy eyes "ready to wake up at any moment".
During the refinement phase we learned that the device needed to cool down, but because we didn't want to add an overly complexe system using a fan and an opening next to the I/O ports; we decided to focus on natural convection. The challenge then was to keep the vents as discreet as possible, cleverly integrated to the original design, yet efficient.
Most recognizable design element: Cujo's Eyes! Early in the ideation phase, we knew that adding visual light feedback was an interesting path, and allowed us to easily move away from "another" box design. With Cujo's CEO's trust, we pushed the concept to its most effective impact. It’s fascinating to see how such a small detail can give so much character to the design.
The collaboration between Cujo and Matter's teams was total. We created both the packaging oobe and visual assets; we worked closely with their engineering partner to make sure every details were considerate even for a young startup device; and we completely redesigned their app, creating a more user friendly interface of a data heavy experience, while reinforcing the trust in the service.
